A family court mediator helps parents discuss custody and parenting-time issues and look for an agreement. The mediator does not serve as either parent's lawyer; confirm the court's local program rules before sharing information.
Confirm the mediator’s role in your court
California describes its family court mediators as impartial professionals who help parents work toward a parenting plan. Its court rule requires the program to explain the limits on confidentiality and circumstances that may lead to a recommendation to the court (California Courts — What to expect from family court mediation; Judicial Branch of California — Rule 5.210).
